Austen Carroll

Dec 3, 2020 | Maker

Texas-native, Austen Carroll, grew up playing guitar in his room when he was grounded. And though he was constantly surrounded by the songs of Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker and Robert Earl Keen; it would not be for another 10 years that he realizes the impact that style of music had on him. “I never tried to learn more chords”, he says about his early days playing guitar, “I was content with knowing 3 or 4 and finding a way to create with what I had”. Now, those “Texas-Country” songwriters are some of his biggest influences, but not exclusively; “I listen to a lot of hip-hop. The structure, cadence, delivery – all those thing are very important to me in writing.”

These days, not much has changed with the songwriting, except for when he gets his band together, Grayson County Burn Ban, who were recently nominated by Westword Magazine for “Best Country Band”.
