Black Mesa

Black Mesa

Black Mesa

In modern Colorado style we migrated to the Centennial state from all corners of the country to settle in beautiful Fort Collins. Our roots stem from influences of classic country, Motown, punk, jazz, surf, and classical that we acquired as youngins in our former home states. Emily, Chris and Bob go way back, playing bars in the mountain towns. Joel, having an extensive and varied history playing in bands, met Chris and Emily in Fort Collins in 2002 and quickly formed a musical bond that has stood the test of time. Pete joined up a few years back and has brought it up a level with serious skills on the kit and knowledge of music theory. Joel and Chris have been the engines behind our recent song-writing spree, with Pete bringing his trained musical skills to create structure and interest, Emily adding compelling lyrics, and Bob producing rock solid guitar licks in our development of new material.

Streamline Cannonball

Streamline Cannonball is a Doc and Merle Watson tribute band formed by local Fort Collins musical artists, Andrew DeCarlo of Cosmic Mesa, Derek Blake of Free Range Pickens and Mustard Licks as well as local upright bass legend, John Stewart. For years the music of Doc and Merle Watson has touched the hearts and minds of these salty dogs and they have embarked on a quest to carry on the songs, styling’s and stories of The Watson Family. Streamline Cannonball performances have been known to shufflin them cards, have you sittin on top of the world, take you to the gallows of a pallet on the floor and leave you drinkin whiskey for breakfast. So get on board! It’s a long steel rail and a short cross tie…The Streamline Cannonball.

The Swingset Players:

Lorna Floyd, vocals, woodwinds. A music teacher for a kinder through 8th grade charter school in Fort Collins, Lorna loves that music is her entire day every day. She studied at Berklee College of Music, and a few other schools along the way…

Chris Emmerich, lead guitar. Chris has lived in Colorado since 1982 and been playing guitar for slightly longer. In addition to playing jazz, he likes/plays Brazilian music and bluegrass (the music, not the water-wasting plant).

Ryan O’Reilly, rhythm guitar. Ryan is an avid traveller that has picked up his style playing in the streets of Latin America. During his recent travel to Cuba, he discovered that music is more than just musical notes in succession, it is passion. He has found an ally to suffice his passion with Lornas Swingset and it is easy to see at every performance.

Guerrilla Fanfare

Guerrilla Fanfare

Guerrilla Fanfare

Composed of university musicians and professionals from the Northern Colorado area, Guerrilla Fanfare is an 8-piece brass band that rocks hard-hitting funk, New Orleans Second Line, fiery originals, and raucous arrangements of modern pop hits. They were formed in 2015 by sousaphonist Zach Brake, trumpeter Jesse Mathews, and New Orleans saxophonist Adam St.-Amand. Influenced by various brass groups such as Rebirth Brass Band, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Youngblood Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, it is natural that Guerrilla Fanfare is devoted to performing crowd-pleasing music with energy and intensity.

Guerrilla Fanfare has performed at the Mishawaka Amphitheater, Aggie Theatre, Mercury Cafe, Moxi Theater, Bohemian Biergarten, Lazy Dog, Cervantes Other Side, and numerous other venues throughout northern Colorado. They recently traveled to the Pacific Northwest, where they landed in Seattle to play numerous sets over the course of three days at Honk Fest West. In September, they helped close out the season at the Mishawaka Amphitheater with MarchFourth. This Spring, they will be touring New Mexico and Texas where they will end the trip at Honk, TX, a 3-day festival of street bands. In the past, Guerrilla Fanfare has teamed up to play super-charged, horn-packed shows with Punch Drunk Munky Funk, Tenth Mountain Division, and other well-loved local bands. Members of Guerrilla Fanfare appeared in Einstein’s Bagels #UnMondayMonday commercial campaign.

One thing is in common for all of these performances: Guerrilla Fanfare brings a fresh, funky, fun atmosphere no matter the occasion.

Ryan Fourt

Ryan’s career in music has spanned twenty years – between his beginnings studying music at the University of Arkansas with Professor James Greeson to becoming a Lecturer and Jazz Guitar Instructor at the University of Wyoming (which is his current teaching gig), his life in music has been expansive and well documented throughout his twenty year journey with several recordings both as a leader and a sideman. His latest album, “Big Slick” on the Colorado based Dazzle Recordings label was released in 2016 and continues to receive extensive radio play both nationally and overseas. The album is also available for purchase and streaming on all major music platforms. On top of teaching and recording Ryan performs regularly at his musical home, Jay’s Bistro in Fort Collins Colorado – becoming the musical director there was a dream job for Fourt and provides a platform for the guitarist to explore his music, primarily in the American jazz idiom on a weekly basis. He can be heard every Friday and Saturday night at Jay’s playing with some of the best musicians both locally and nationally providing enjoyment for the regulars who frequent the long-time jazz spot. Ryan currently lives in Greeley Colorado but often ventures back to his home state of Arkansas to enjoy time with family and maybe even play a gig or two while he’s home.

Matt Smiley

Matt Smiley

Matt Smiley

Matt Smiley is a bassist, composer, and educator from Staunton, Virginia, now residing in northern Colorado.

In his work as a performer and a composer, Smiley focuses on developing systems and modes of playing at the nexus of composition and improvisation that reference elements of established American vernacular and experimental music traditions, while simultaneously and idiosyncratically deviating from them. His multifaceted and studied approach to both the bass and composition enable an adroit facility in both idiomatic and non-idiomatic settings.

Since moving to Colorado, Smiley has worked with a number of diverse and prominent performers and composers including Alvin Lucier, Christian Wolff, Stephen Drury, Jean-Claude Risset, Terrell Stafford, and Greg Osby.

In addition to his rigorous performance schedule, he teaches at both Denver School of the Arts Jazz Camp and The Gift of Jazz, a non-profit focusing on enriching the community through the creation, promotion, and preservation of the art of jazz in the Rocky Mountain Region.
